An Expression of Perfect Musicality
This is a *fantastic* album which *everyone* should buy. Yamashita's talents are in full evidence here. What some people seem to just not get is that Yamashita has moved on from the days of orchestral transcriptions, and has now moved into the realm of serious new music for the guitar.
The works included on this CD are a blessing to the classical guitar world. Everyone should be thankful to Keiko Fujiie for writing these splendid works, and to Kazuhito Yamashita for recording them so that a world wide audience can enjoy them.
Only the musically inept will fail to appreciate this album as the work of genius that it is.

力作だが一般聴衆にはアピールしないだろう
「青い花」は45分程度の大作。ギターソロの曲としては異例の長さである。山下はかつて、他の楽器やオーケストラのための大作をギターのソロやデュオに編曲演奏し、多くのファンを得た。今回は、これをギター・オリジナル曲でやったわけだが、人気という点からはマイナスだろう。まず、話題性は有名曲の編曲・演奏に比べようもない。曲の出来は、確かにじっくり聴くと、４楽章で45分持たせるための工夫が散らばめてあり、全体の構成も良いが、山下がかつて編曲演奏していたいわゆる「名曲」の域に達しているようには、個人的には思わない(勿論、これには異論がありうるが)。山下の演奏も、かつての編曲演奏が、超絶技巧を駆使し、音色も華やかだったのと、対極のものになっている。つまり、単音が多く、音色も微妙な変化は多いが、とにかく地味で、ギターの玄人が頭で理解しても、一般聴衆にはアピールしないのではないか。せめて「さくら、さくら」ぐらいはのびのびと謳って、心に響くものを期待したが、曲自体が、日本古謡をアカデミックに解析して分断し、つなぎなおしたような作品で、演奏はそれに忠実である結果、頭で分かっても心にうったえかけてこない。たしかに、このようなレパートリーが、ギターにもあってもよいと思う。また、このような性格の作曲家としては才能のある自分の妻(藤家は山下の妻であるとのこと)のキャリアを後押しする態度には敬意を払いたい。しかし、近年の山下は藤家作品とバッハぐらいしか弾かなくなっており、多彩な才能を多方面に開花させていたかつての山下を知る者としては、大変残念である。藤家作品の演奏は、このアルバムで一区切りにして、他のレパートリーにときどき織り込む程度にしてバランスをとらないと、世のギタリストが総じて羨む山下の才能の浪費であると思う。
